When it comes to Night Vision setups and running lasers, you need an IR (Infrared) laser in order to aim actively at night under NODs. The Steiner DBAL-I2 (Duel Beam Aiming Laser) not only does this, but also has a visible laser as well.
While there is an argument for just having a IR Laser, having the VIS Laser is pretty handy. For one, it can be used the same way the IR laser is used under NVGs, except during the day. With the caveat being the distance is usually more limited. Another big advantage is the training aspect. Learning to constantly activate the switch, and transitioning seamlessly to performing the same task under night vision.
