Let me introduce you to the “Date Night” Drill. Or depending on your situation, “Get Your Kid Out Of A Bad Situation” Drill. Ultimately it is a little drill that is set up in such a way that you can get some repetitions on a lot of really handy skills, some of which I was shown by Bill Rapier of AMTAC Shooting.
It is set up with a IPSC Target at about 2 yards off the driver’s side door and a steel target about 10 yards off the passenger side of the vehicle. For this I used the ADAP Target from TATargets. You will also want some sort of sandbag, such as the one I’m using from Brute Force Sandbags.
This isn’t “the way” a situation will necessarily go down for you, but the drill gives us the opportunity to work a number of individual skills. Like a slow draw (which is incredibly valuable I think), shooting from a vehicle, removing ourselves safely from a vehicle with a firearm, re-holstering under pressure, drawing out one handed while carrying something heavy, making one handed shots while carrying something heavy, moving safely with a pistol while carrying something heavy… There is a lot to be gained here I feel.
If you try it, let me know how it works out for you.
